House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three other people were wounded in the attack.

Mika and the other victims were honored at the annual congressional charity baseball game at Nationals Park on Thursday night.

Doctors say Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving.

Mika's family praised the care the team at George Washington University Hospital have given him and said they are "grateful beyond words for the heroic actions" of the two officers, who have been widely hailed for preventing further bloodshed.

He has had several operations since the shooting.

The officials said investigators don't know what the list of names means, but members of Congress have been briefed. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I understand he was awake on scene but by the time he was transported by helicopter to the MedStar trauma center, he was in shock", Sava said.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital.

Scalise sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

House Speaker Paul Ryan visited Scalise at the hospital today, an aide said.

The gunman, James Hodgkinson from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by officers in Mr Scalise's security detail.

The surgeon said there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Mr Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

"Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition", the release said. "When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death".
