And it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

According to Comey, Trump was referring to the FBI's investigation into Mike Flynn, who was sacked himself as national security adviser months earlier for allegedly lying to White House officials about his post-election contacts with Russian operatives.

In a tweet early on Thursday, Trump said: "They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story".

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's outside attorney, Marc Kasowitz, slammed the Post's reporting. Trump had viewed Sessions' recusal as unnecessary, even though Justice Department regulations made it nearly impossible to avoid.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

A heightened sense of unease has gripped the White House after US President Donald Trump lashed out at reports that he is under scrutiny over whether he had obstructed justice.

Trump was strongly critical of some of Comey's testimony but said Comey had vindicated him by saying while he was at the agency, Trump was not the subject of the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

Special Counsel Mueller likely "will be archiving these various Twitter rants as supplemental evidence" for the obstruction investigation, Moss, who also is deputy executive director of the James Madison Project, told VOA. Sad!" Trump tweeted. "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.

They have tried to highlight the positive reviews he received on Wednesday when he made a statesman-like appearance in the White House to address the nation after House of Representatives Republican whip Steve Scalise was shot during a congressional baseball practice.

Not only is the president allegedly under new investigation, but based on reports, he may have brought this on himself.

Vice president Mike Pence, who headed the Trump transition until Inauguration Day, has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe a nd Mr Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen has retained a brief to represent him.

"I am not stonewalling", Mr. Sessions replied, saying he was simply following Justice Department policy not to discuss confidential communications with the president.

"Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch or agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated", he said.

Mueller continues to hire a team of lawyers, and with FBI investigators is gathering information that is widely expected to lead to a formal investigation into whether President Trump attempted to interfere in the investigation.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he wrote.
