Challenged on "Fox News Sunday" about the issue, Sekulow said he could not be certain Trump was not under investigation but that no one had notified the legal team if that was the case.

Sekulow made four TV appearances on Sunday to clarify the situation.

Last week, Trump sent a tweet referring to being the victim of a "witch hunt".

The president has denied that he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation and has also disputed that he has attempted to block the investigation into his campaign's possible role in Russia's election-related hacking.

He insisted Trump's tweet was not a real statement, explaining that the message was in response to a Washington Post report suggesting the president was under investigation.

"That the president was not and is not a target of investigation", Sekulow answered.

A representative from President Donald Trump's legal team said Trump is not under investigation, despite the President tweeting "I am being investigated" this week.

Trump has hinted that he may have taped conversations with Comey - in which the ex-FBI chief says the president pressured him for his loyalty and on the Russian Federation investigation while also urging him to drop a probe into former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Cohen said the first official communication that a target is under investigation typically comes when prosecutors begin requesting documents and other evidence. Russian officials have denied meddling in the US election.

Sekulow said Trump would address the issue of the tapes - whose very existence is unclear - in the "week ahead". Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit — including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich — have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, defended Mueller and his team, noting that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have praised his appointment.

Schiff said if the panel can't get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed.

Trump himself used Twitter Friday to at Rosenstein, saying he was "being investigated" for firing former FBI Director James Comey "by the man who told me to fire the FBI director", seemingly referencing Rosenstein.

"There has been no notification from the special counsel's office that the president is under investigation", Mr Sekulow said. He can not in a Twitter statement include all of that in there. He said the tweet last Friday from Trump was specifically directed at a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

His morning missive apparently referred to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated.

Sekulow said Trump "is not and has not been under investigation". "That's impossible. The president cannot be investigated, or certainly cannot be found liable for engaging in an activity he clearly has power to do under the constitution".

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m., Trump wrote: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt". "Many new jobs, high business enthusiasm, massive regulation cuts, 36 new legislative bills signed, great new S.C. Justice, and Infrastructure, Healthcare and Tax Cuts in works!" he wrote.
