James, who is from Belleville, allegedly injured two and wounded four when he opened fire on Republican members of Congress Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia as they practiced for the Congressional baseball game.

Residents of Del Ray, the Alexandria neighborhood where Hodgkinson opened fire, said the white van was discovered by police in the YMCA's parking lot next to the field.

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours".

Hodgkinson told his wife he was going to Washington to "work with people to change the tax brackets", she said. I had no idea this was gonna happen, and I don't know what to say about it. "I can't wrap my head around it".

But she maintained there was nothing she could have done about it. "[James] was home all day long and he just wanted a break", she said.

Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.

Authorities say he was unknown to the Secret Service...

"I didn't like him from the beginning", she said.

Sue Hodgkinson stood unsteady and emotional as a local sheriff's deputy held her hand and led her to a bank of several microphones.

According to reports from ABC News, Hodgkinson campaigned for the Democratic party and openly expressed his distaste for Trump and the Republican party.

In the past year, many of his posts consisted of signed petitions with titles such as: "Bernie - please run no matter what" and "Hillary Rodham Clinton should concede the nomination to Bernie Sanders;" CNN reported.

Zachary Barth, staffer for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), and Capitol Police agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey were also wounded in the attack, but their injuries are not life-threatening. "But you just never know".

On March 24, Bill Schaumleffel recalled hearing shots being fired outside his house, which stands about 500 feet behind Hodgkinson's home.

She said she believed he was going to return to the Metro East from Washington soon because he was out of money.

Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County sheriff's office, said afterward that Hodgkinson was told about the shooting by a journalist and has been with the Federal Bureau of Investigation since the shooting.
