A story doing the rounds after his name was announced as presidential nominee of the ruling NDA was that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had wondered who Kovind was when he was appointed Governor of the state in 2015.

"So far as the NDA nominee is concerned, the Congress has nothing to say on the merits or demerits".

Even as Ram Nath Kovind was declared as the ruling BJP's candidate for President of India yesterday, dissenting voices are being heard across the political spectrum. Now, TRS (2%), BJD (2.99%), AIADMK (5.99%), YSR Congress (1.53%) have already supported the candidate. "Heartiest congratulations to Shri #RamNathKovind ji on his nomination as our candidate for the office of President of India", she tweeted. Barring the Shiv Sena, which has been dithering, the other allies welcomed the BJP's move.

"Yes, they did inform us but only after they had decided on the name".

Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind meeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday.

He went on to work as Private Secretary to Morarji Desai, the then Prime Minister of India, besides representing India in the United Nations in NY.

"In this backdrop and considering the fact that Shri Kovind is an eminent lawyer belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, BJD, after discussing with senior leaders of the party has made a decision to support his candidature", said CM Naveen. He devoted his life to public service & worked for poor & marginalized. From being seen as a party of the upper castes and traders, Modi and Shah have tried to re-image the BJP as embracing the entire "Hindu Samaj".

That Kovind was a virtual unknown - he contested and lost the Lok Sabha election in 1991 from Ghattampur in Uttar Pradesh and the 2007 assembly election from Bhognipur - gave heft to many detractors in the opposition. So there is no question of mutual consent. "I hope that every citizen will support me", he said. "The Shiv Sena has always kept away from such vote-bank politics", said Uddhav Thackeray at a rally to mark the party's 51st foundation day celebrations.

He said the opposition did not expect this "unilateral" decision by the BJP to name Kovind. The Congress, Trinamool Congress and the Left parties are likely to field a joint-candidate.

"On the BJP fielding a Dalit candidate, Azad said, ". However, the CM said that the party would announce its decision only after the Opposition meeting on June 22. However, to get to the half-way mark, BJP will need the support of a few parties to put Kovind in Raisina Hill.

Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu insisted that all parties were consulted. Without revealing the name how will you build a consensus? They said that when they decide, they will come back to us with a proposal.

The Sena's stance on Kovind's candidature in the upcoming election will be considered crucial as the party is a BJP partner both at the center and in Maharashtra. "Now we will take a call".

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the notification in this regard and the process of the nomination has started that will continue till June 28.
