The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice in relation to ongoing investigations of Russian influence in the 2016 election.

Trump took to his Twitter account Thursday morning to denounce the report.

Mr Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Moscow's involvement in the presidential election past year and possible collusion by Trump campaign associates with the Russians, but there has been no indication that Mr Mueller told the president to fire Mr Comey.

On Thursday, Trump blasted news reports that he is under criminal investigation as a "witch hunt" against him led by some "very bad" people.

Trump's tweets have recently looked an terrible lot like what a reporter said were GOP talking points meant to combat the Post's report.

Mueller's friendship with Comey and Mueller's selection of several investigators who have made campaign donations to Democrats are among the issues Gingrich is raising as problematic.

In response to the news, Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said in a statement, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal".

Mr Trump was strongly critical of some of Mr Comey's testimony but said Mr Comey had vindicated him by saying while he was at the agency, Mr Trump was not the subject of the FBI's Russian Federation probe. Former FBI head Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel a day after a report stemming from the notes was published.

President Trump needs to get both his act and his story together.

Seth Moulton, a congressman from Salem in Massachusetts, tweeted, "As the Representative of Salem, MA, I can confirm that this is false", referring to Mr Trump's "witch hunt" whine.

Mr. Trump's morning tweets included what seemed like a jab at former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the new Special Counsel for the Russian Federation probe, as he said the investigation was being "led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?", Trump tweeted just before 4 p.m. EDT. However, Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Comey.

Mr Trump denied those allegations, saying he would be more than willing to offer his own testimony under oath.

One memo recounts a February request from Trump, during a private meeting in the Oval Office, that Comey end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
