"He's not afraid of the investigation - there is no investigation", Sekulow said, adding, "there is not an investigation of the President of the United States, period".

The committee sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday.

US President Donald Trump has issued a stream of tweets defending his record and lashing out at the investigation into Russian interference in last year's US presidential election. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation. Trump is accused of firing FBI director James Comey over his refusal to steer the Russian Federation investigation away from former national security adviser and Trump ally Mike Flynn. It also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos.

Schiff says if the panel can't get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed.

"Witch hunt' is how Trump characterises the probe into Russia's election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates".

Sekulow said Trump "is not and has not been under investigation".

"That signifies this president knew all too well that it was inappropriate", Schiff said. Angus King, another member of the committee and an Independent from ME who caucuses with Democrats. King said the "collusion, the cooperation aspect of the investigation is not over".

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized President Donald Trump's decision to freeze a detente with Cuba and his verbal attack on the Caribbean island's leaders. "There's a lot of information yet to go".

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday, attorney Jay Sekulow said the "president is not under investigation by the special counsel".

President Trump continued to refer to what he feels is a "witch hunt" against him in another slew of new tweets Sunday morning, writing that it is a distraction from the rest of his priorities: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

He spoke on ABC's "This Week".
