British media have reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior paneling on the 24-story tower in a renovation that was completed just previous year.

He said he was hopeful the meeting, which lasted almost two hours and was attended by victims, residents, community leaders and volunteers, was the starting point for a process of lasting change.

People demonstrate demanding answers over the Grenfell Tower fire, in London, Friday June 16, 2017.

"I do understand for the people of Grenfell Tower that is no consolation, but if we were to change that advice now and have everyone evacuating through single staircases, it would cause more problems and more injuries".

He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there", adding: "On Saturday I went in myself and went to the top floor".

British officials said Sunday that exterior cladding used in a recent renovation of the building may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations.

Entire families remain unaccounted for, and authorities say the fire was so devastating their search operation may take weeks and the true death toll may never be known.

On Saturday, British Prime Minister had said that she believed the official response to the fire was "not good enough". "All our warnings fell on deaf ears and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable", the group said after the fire broke out, according to the Associated Press.

Anger has been mounting in recent days as relatives and community members expressed frustration with the lack of information about those still missing and the slow pace of efforts to find temporary housing for the hundreds of now-homeless tower residents.

She also says she will receive daily reports from the stricken neighborhood and has established a $6.4 million emergency fund to help the tower families.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard. British health authorities say that 19 patients are still being treated at four London hospitals. Our focus has been on those that we know were in Grenfell Tower.

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said on Monday that five people had been identified.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples to try and positively identify victims.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

May was asked repeatedly in an interview on Friday whether she had misread the public mood.

Tributes are left by Latymer Community Church, near to Grenfell Tower in west London after a fire engulfed the 24-storey building last week.

"When an existing building is undergoing a renovation, upgraded fire safety measures may be required depending on the type of insulation and cladding proposed as part of the renovation", he said. British officials have ordered a review of other buildings that have had similar renovations.

The tragedy has provoked a huge response from nearby communities.

Another complicating factor is that much of the DNA material that would normally be used to help pinpoint victims - like toothbrushes or combs - were probably also incinerated in the blaze.

Numerous displaced are living in churches and community centers.
