A gunman who was dressed in a UPS uniform opened fire at United Parcel service, killing three people and then himself on Wednesday morning.

Mayor Ed Lee, in a statement, said he "wanted to thank our courageous officers of the San Francisco Police Department and our dedicated employees at 911 and San Francisco General Hospital".

Witnesses say they heard several shots and saw people running out the UPS building.

The shooting prompted a massive police response in one of the city's industrial neighborhoods, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from downtown San Francisco, Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin told reporters.

All of the victims were UPS drivers, and the incident occurred when they gathered for their daily morning meeting before starting their package deliveries, UPS officials said. Investigators were still working to determine a motive.

"Cook said he heard another series of five shots before the area fell silent and he escaped from the building with others".

UPS spokesman Steve Gaut said Wednesday that he believed the shooter "turned the gun on himself" but did not have additional information.

Local media quoted witnesses within the warehouse as saying that the gunman went in through the front entrance and started shooting, without saying anything, once at the back of a victim and then at the heads of some others.

UPS spokesman Steve Gaut said the shooter was a company employee. Five other employees were injured, according to the police, probably while the building was being evacuated. "Any shooting is one shooting too many".

The suspect was still in the building at 9:30 a.m., according a police officer at the scene. Police declared the scene contained about 90 minutes later. The warning was lifted almost three hours later after the incident was "contained" and the building was "secured", police said.

Chaplin said authorities don't know at his point whether the shooter targeted victims. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those touched by this incident", UPS said in a statement.

They were asking people in the area to shelter in place.

"The company is cooperating with law enforcement".

UPS said the facility is an area package sorting hub and package delivery center. Once on the roof, armed police reportedly ordered these bystanders to keep their hands up until they were closer.

Police had few details on Lam. UPS CEO David Abney said the company was investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting.

"I was sick to my stomach, seeing those bodies", Chino said.

Police are advising people to avoid the area.

"It's really creepy that people next door have the ability to have guns and have the ability to shoot people that they work with".
