Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Jennifer Scalise also is thanking the first responders who rushed to her husband's aid Wednesday and the staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where her husband remains in critical condition.

Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria.

Sava said Scalise will require surgeries soon for abdominal and bone injuries, in addition to the two he has undergone to fix a bone in his leg broken by the bullet.

The House of Representatives majority whip underwent another operation on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with his family.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

Scalise's surgeon says he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being at risk of death when he arrived at the hospital.

"The FBI continues to process evidence collected from various search sites in an effort to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a press release Friday.

Scalise suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in ... he was as critical as you can be when he came in". He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital. "Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of [Capitol Police officers] Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved everyone's lives at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's".

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
