Scalise, the third-ranking GOP leader in the House, "continues to show signs of improvement", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his family.

Scalise was in dire condition when he was shot at the Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

Hodgkinson 66, who was from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, died after being shot by police.

A Republican supporter holds up a sign supporting House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) before the Democrats and Republicans face off in the annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park in Washington, U.S., June 15, 2017. The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

Griner remained in the hospital in good condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the ankle, according to a Friday update.

This person says investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and it's not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday. "After he leaves the hospital he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago".

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital.

Matt Mika, a lobbyist who was shot in the chest, also underwent additional surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, his family said in a statement Saturday.
