The global market for VR headsets is expected to grow from 9 million headsets shipped past year to 67 million in 2021, according to IDC. Apple also has an official Metal 2 Developer Kit that supports eGPUs and VR headsets. The second half of 2016 saw a ramp up in volume from three highly publicized market leading VR device products, the Sony PlayStation VR, the HTC Vive, and Facebook's Oculus Rift. "With lower hardware requirements on the PC and lower prices on headsets, VR will be more accessible than ever before".

In that time, standalone VR headsets, which do not require a smartphone and are untethered from a PC or game console, are expected to grow from less than 1% to more than a quarter (27%) of the market, according to IDC. "And the introduction of additional motion tracking and hand tracking will help further blur the line between digital and physical reality". The reason for this is not that AR is less important, but rather it is harder to achieve.

The AR market is at its early stages, especially regarding headsets. Supporting this is a wide range of products, some of which are commercially available, but most are from non-household names.

Augmented reality will be the domain of the enterprise and consumers will be all about the virtual reality if an IDC forecast plays through 2021. ODG, Meta and Intel are also AR players. The list goes well beyond that of other companies which have either deployed or are readying for deployment of similar devices. "We believe that many industrial jobs will fundamentally change because of AR in the next 5-years and these are much more opportunistic markets for dedicated AR headsets than the consumer market".

IDC says screenless VR headsets that require a smartphone to work have been the most popular while dedicated VR headsets from Sony, HTC, and Oculus gained in popularity by the end of a year ago.
