Syria conflict: Russian Federation issues warning after United States coalition downs jet

The US-led coalition on Sunday said it downed the plane after it dropped bombs on American-backed forces fighting the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group in northern Syria.

Russia's Defense Ministry issued an ominous warning to Washington on Monday, saying it would track us -led coalition aircraft operating in certain areas of Syria as potential targets.

Those forces, which are aligned with the U.S.in the campaign against the Islamic State group, warned Syrian government troops to stop their attacks or face retaliation. The U.S. Navy says one of them was attacked by that Syrian aircraft it shot down.

MOSCOW (AP) - A top Russian diplomat on Monday condemned the United States for shooting down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet the previous day as an act of "aggression", while USA -backed opposition forces on the ground warned Syrian government troops to stop their attacks or face retaliation.

Russian Defense Ministry has denounced the U.S. aggression and violation of Syria's sovereignty with the attack on the SU-22 fighter jet, whose pilot was catapulted, but his whereabouts are still unknown.

Russian Federation has fighter aircraft, air defense weapons and other military assets in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad's government.

"As of June 19 this year, the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation has ended its interaction with the USA side under a memorandum for preventing incidents and providing for safe flights during operations in Syria and demands that the U.S. command carry out a careful investigation and report about its results and the measures taken", the statement reads.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said of the US military action in Syria, "What is this, if not an act of aggression?"

Ryabkov asked: "What is this, if not an act of aggression?"

The US military statement said it acted in "collective self-defence" of its partner forces and the US did not seek a fight with the Syrian Government or its Russian supporters.

The pro-government forces are not fighting the battle for Raqqa, but they have been making ground against IS in the surrounding area, south-west of the city. Syrian Democratic Forces rumbles through the Raqqa area on Sunday.

It was also the first time the US Air Force had shot down a manned aircraft since May 1999.

The SDF however accused the Syrian government on Monday of attacking its positions using planes, artillery and tanks. Iraqi lawmaker Abdul-Bari Zebari said his country agreed to the missile overflight after coordination with Iran, Russia and Syria.

Speaking in Washington, the top US military officer said the two sides discussed the matter as recently as Monday morning but that further talks are needed.
