Gingrich, the former House speaker whose wife is seeking Senate approval to become the USA ambassador to the Vatican, continued to defend Trump Thursday morning.

Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion by Trump campaign associates with the Russians, but there has been no indication that Mueller told Trump to fire Comey.

According to former FBI Director James Comey in his testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee last week, President Trump asked him three times if the FBI had him under investigation regarding the Russian probe.

The New York Times sued the FBI on Friday, seeking a court's help in getting the agency to turn over documents created by fired FBI Director James Comey after his conversations with President Donald Trump.

He's been advised of the legal ramifications from making these presidential statements on Twitter, but he and at least a few advisers have come to believe the political fight is more urgent.

The Department of Justice has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to head the investigation into Russian involvement in USA policy.

He declined to say whether he thought Trump sought to obstruct justice, saying that would be up to Mueller to sort out.

"He could decide after talking to Comey, after reviewing the evidence and interviewing others that what they tell him does not back up bringing any charges or trying to bring any charges for attempted obstruction".

Shortly after Trump fired Comey, a Justice Department official tapped Mueller to take up the investigation as a special counsel.

Obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense.

Any such step would face a steep hurdle as it would require approval by the US House of Representatives, which is controlled by Mr Trump's fellow Republicans.

The president, for his part, has denied any collusion between members of his campaign and Russian agents looking to interfere with the election.

Pence has seldom addressed the Russian Federation issue, which has overshadowed Trump's White House agenda.

If Mueller strays from the straight and narrow, Rosenstein should not hesitate to remove him and name someone else to serve as special counsel.

The Post reported that Mueller and his team are interviewing senior intelligence officials about Trump's role, including Dan Coats, director of national intelligence; Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, who recently left his role as Rogers' deputy.

The story cites five officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

But a new worry about Mueller is taking shape.

Mr Mueller briefed senators on Wednesday on his work. "Nice", Trump wrote on Twitter.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Comey had presented no evidence to prove that Moscow meddled in the USA election, adding that Washington had tried to influence Russian elections "year after year".

Trump also attacked the media Friday morning.

The investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government has now turned to investigating Trump himself for obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The administration initially gave differing reasons for his dismissal, including that he had lost the confidence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
