United Nations lights up for International Yoga Day

The world's longest chain link yoga exhibition has been held in Mysuru on the backdrop of the 3rd International Yoga Day celebrations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message on Yoga Day was played before practitioners led the gathering through the two-hour yoga and meditation sessions. Actor and activist Anupam Kher, who turned on the light show, said: "It's great, great feeling, personally for me as an Indian, as a citizen of the world and (with the global recognition of) yoga today".

The Consulate had planned a flagship event for the day at the city's historic and popular Battery Park where hundreds of people were expected to participate in the Yoga Day celebrations.

Das said resonance for the Yoga Day has grown in three years since the day was first marked in 2015. The programme is being organised as per the direction of Government of India.The celebration of worldwide day of Yoga will involve training programme on common yoga protocol as well as discourses, lectures and talks by eminent yoga experts.

"People realise the benefits of yoga, and India's name is intrinsically associated with the day", she said.

In commemoration of the day, the United Nations headquarters have been lit up for the second year in a row with images of yoga postures.

Chef de Cabinet of the UN Secretary General Maria Luiza Ribeiro and President of the General Assembly Ambassador Peter Thomson are special guests on the occasion. Students from schools, colleges, universities and various youth organisations such as NYKS, NSS, residents welfare association and civil society organisations will participate in the programmes.The government has directed all district collectors, heads of departments, heads of public undertaking and autonomous bodies to hold a mass yoga demonstration at the state, district, block and panchayat level on June 21.
