The Prince was admitted on Tuesday evening to London's King Edward VII Hospital, where he was treated for an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

The Duke, who has had some medical problems over the years, appeared to be in good health at Ascot with the Queen on Tuesday and well enough to go about his usual business.

Prince Philip, the 96-year-old husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, has been admitted to the hospital for treatment for an infection.

"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot", Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

"The Prince of Wales will accompany the Queen to the State Opening".

The official statement also said that the Queen is being kept informed of the condition and as planned, she would attend the Royal Ascot on Wednesday afternoon.

He was recently seen at the Trooping the Colour parade, which celebrates the monarch's birthday, and at the opening of Royal Ascot on Tuesday.

In May, Philip announced he was stepping down from public life and wouldn't take on new charity roles after more than six decades of service.

The royal has been hospitalized several times in recent years, including for treatment of a blocked coronary artery in 2011 and a bladder infection in 2012, but he has been in generally good health. The palace said the infection was related to an existing condition that wasn't made public.

He is well-known for his robust constitution.
