Rep. Scalise was struck in the hip and the bullet shattered blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. The news got even better on Wednesday when the center stated that Scalise is "beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation".

Hodgkinson, who authorities said spent the last few months living in a white van parked at a local YMCA, opened fire just after 7 a.m. Wednesday on Republican lawmakers and staffers practicing for a charity baseball game scheduled the next day.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he visited Scalise in the hospital Friday and saw him breathing on his own, talking and sending text messages.

Scalise, a veteran Louisiana politician, was reported by CNN to be clinging to life after surgery.

Congressman Scalise has been upgraded to fair condition, which is a huge improvement from the critical condition that he was in when he entered the hospital just one week ago.

He was in shock and "imminent risk of death" when he arrived, the hospital's chief trauma surgeon said.

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

During the congressional baseball practice June 14, a gunman injured Scalise, congressional staffer Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika and two members of the Capitol Police force, Crystal Griner and David Bailey.
