Much of the praise was rightfully heaped on Andy Serkis' performance as Caesar, whilst praise was also given to Steve Zahn as newcomer Bad Ape.

In Rise, we met Caesar as an infant being raised by research scientist Will Rodman (James Franco), and witnessed his accelerated development and eventual imprisonment.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar faces an ultimate battle against human forces led by a ruthless Colonel played by Woody Harrelson.

After seeing Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it's highly unlikely that anyone would tell Caesar to "take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!".

Over the course of three films, Weta Digital has mastered the art of translating human actors to apes. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, along with Karin Konoval and Judy Greer.

In a time when movie characters in blockbusters often seem thin, it's somewhat unbelievable to note that arguably the most fully-fleshed-out character in any current big-budget franchise is actually an ape performed by an actor who is totally hidden behind CGI.

The third chapter of the rebooted series marks the end of the trilogy but not the franchise, said the film's director and co-writer Matt Reeves.
