PM Modi delighted as Ujjwala Yojana reaches 2.5-crore beneficiaries

Around 35 lakh connections have been provided in West Bengal under PMUY.

It is part of a larger programme of adding 10 crore new LPG connections by 2019 to achieve full coverage of connections in Indian households. To expand the reach of LPG in West Bengal, more than 600 distributorships will be commissioned in the state, of which more than 50 distributorships will be commissioned in Murshidabad district, he said.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, is a scheme to provide clean cooking fuel to the women belonging to the "Below Poverty Line" (BPL) households across the country.

The government has set a target of five crore LPG connections to be distributed to the BPL households across the country under the scheme. The identification of BPL families has been made on Social Economic Caste Census (SECC)- 2011 data.

In May last year, the Government had embarked on a drive to provide free cooking gas connections to 5 crore women from poor households in three years with a view to reduce the use of polluting fuels such as wood and dried cow dung.

An official statement said that public sector oil marketing companies have given 3.25 crore new connections across the country in the financial year 2016-2017. This is the highest ever LPG connections released in any given year.

The government also said that the total number of active LPG consumers in the country has reached to 20.7 crore.
