Another Indian student, identified as Winson Singh, 23, was also found hanging from a ceiling fan at the same flat in Akbar Shah locality, the police said.

Md Jashimuddin, Sub-Inspector at Akbar Shah police station said in a statement, "It appears that Ateef and one of his roommates, Winson, were drunk when they brawled..." Several months later, a female MBBS student of USTC of the same country, introducing her as Ateef's wife, started staying there.

Singh was, however, rescued by other flatmates and both of them were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in wee hours of Saturday, Bdnews24.com reported.

The youths used to arrange parties with friends often in the flat.

They took liquor in their room around 1:00 am.

Another student Neeraj Guru, who shared the same flat with Sheikh and Singh, said that both men were drinking alcohol in their rooms and soon he heard noises from their room and tried to open the door which was locked from inside.

Ateef's parents would arrive in Bangladesh Sunday, the OC said.

Asif's body was bearing the marks of sharp weapons, he added. After an autopsy, the body was handed over to the USTC authorities.

Police primarily suspected that following an altercation between the two in a drunken state, Winson might have stabbed Ateef to death and later tried to kill himself.

Deputy Commissioner (ADC-west zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Farookul Haque said Winson will be interrogated after his condition improves.
