A teenager is feared dead after being sucked into a cave as he tried to save a friend.

Ali Ahmed, 19, from East London, was reported missing on Wednesday evening, prompting a major air and land rescue mission at the gorge near Pitlochry.

It is understood the teenager was with friends who attempted to rescue him when he got into difficulty in the water.

A police spokesman confirmed the body has been formally identified as Mr Ahmed and next of kin has been informed.

A search for the young man, believed to be an 18-year-old from Newham in England, has so far drawn a blank.

Just hours later, officers called off the search after discovering the body of a teenager in the water nearby.

The alarm was raised yesterday at 5.40pm and a subsequent search operation was launched by emergency services.

"Our thoughts are with his family".
