The Panthers finished first in the NFC South in Gettleman's first three seasons with the team and they won the NFC Championship in 2015.

The Panthers have relieved Dave Gettleman of his duties as GM, team owner Jerry Richardson announced Monday.

During an appearance on the Know Them from Adam podcast last week, Williams said the Panthers were one of four teams he wouldn't play for next season, along with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys. "While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed". He made the playoffs in three of his four years, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Now there's been another parting of the ways when it comes to a franchise and a talent evaluator. The Chiefs and Panthers' decisions, in particular, came at odd junctures on the National Football League calendar. Beane would have been a natural choice to take Gettleman's place, but Carolina will have to go in another direction now.

Gettleman authorized contract extensions for Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly but was also involved in some high-profile decisions that ended up seeing key players depart.

DeAngelo Williams recently revealed a list of teams he won't play for in 2017, and the Carolina Panthers were on that list. Now the former Giant finds himself in need of a new job. He was with the Buffalo Bills in 1990 and 1991, the Denver Broncos in 1997 and the New York Giants in 200, 2007 and 2011, before joining the Panthers.
