Ricciardo has finished on the podium in each of the last five races, including winning in Azerbaijan, but will now start Sunday's grand prix on the back foot.

He came to Silverstone amid a certain negativity, stirred by his no-show at the Formula One Live event in London, but here he has done everything he needed to do and more.

Verstappen said: "It was a lonely qualifying for me and we ended up pretty much exactly where I expected".

Speaking about his problem on Saturday, Ricciardo said: "I think it was something to do with the turbo, that was the first noise I heard which didn't sound healthy". Fifth was the best we could have done today and I achieved that.

Lewis might be an expat, but I would not for one moment challenge his Britishness or his attachment to where he has been brought up.

However, he was due to start from the penultimate place on the grid because of the 30-place grid drop Fernando Alonso was forced to take. But a suspected turbo failure saw grind to a halt at Woodcote, stopping the session so marshals could recover his stricken RB13.

Hamilton led from start to finish and avoided the carnage that unfolded behind him, but Ricciardo says his rollercoaster of a day was just his way of ensuring the British fans didn't forget about him.

"We lost a bit, the first sector as well we are losing out, but I almost spun on the first run on the super softs in Maggots/Becketts".

"Tomorrow is where the points are, we've got to work hard to get back in there but it is what it is". This weather could help me out, get me a few more positions.
