The Detroit Pistons have waived guard Michael Gbinije, a move that was anticipated Saturday, otherwise his $1.3 million contract would have been guaranteed. With the move, the Pistons will save more than $800,000 and eliminate his $1.312 million cap hit. They can also add two two-way contracts which essentially assigns a player to the G League (former the D-League) but allows them to stay with the National Basketball Association team up to 45 days at minimum salary pay.

The Pistons have the minimum 14 guaranteed contracts and aren't expected to add another.

Gbinije was selected by the Pistons in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft out of Syracuse. Gbinije appeared in only nine games last season for Detroit, scoring a total of just four points.

He also played in 16 games with the Grand Rapids Drive, where he averaged 12 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 35 minutes a game.
