Everton head to Netherlands without Ross Barkley for pre-season trip

Tottenham are reportedly pushing to secure the signing of Ross Barkley before they depart for their pre-season tour this week, but there's still a gap to be bridged.

Everton are still holding out for a deal in the region of £50 million, a figure vindicated by Spurs selling Kyle Walker to Manchester City for £54m this week.

Everton are unlikely to come down on their asking price despite the fact Barkley is keen on a move to London.

Barkley's reluctance to put pen to paper on a new contract leaves him open to depart as a free agent next summer, with boss Ronald Koeman confessing earlier this week that the situation remains unclear.

Everton have already spent quite a bit this transfer window, and are still being linked with a big-money move for Swansea' Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Spurs fans who are not hugely enthusiastic about signing Barkley hope Pochettino can get the best out of a young English talent.

The England worldwide, who scored five goals in his 36 Premier League appearances last season, has always been linked with a move to Tottenham, but Everton are reported to be demanding £50million for the 23-year-old. He really hasn't improved that much since breaking into the Everton first team in the 2013-14 season. "He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that's needed, too".

Add in a gruelling training regime that would make Barkley physically stronger and fitter and he could just turn into the player that Spurs will need post-Dembele.

While not as silky on the ball as Dembele (who completed 84% of his take ons last season) Barkley is also an excellent ball-carrier (66% take on success) and is comfortable when in possession.
