Mourinho shocked Chelsea by swopping ahead of them in the race for Romelu Lukaku before signing him in a £76 million deal.

Mourinho and United are determined to keep their number one, and it may well be in 12 months time that the real battle for De Gea takes place, when there is only a year left on his contract.

It seems like negotiations between Real Madrid and Man United dragged on for so long that Morata went slightly mental. We were interested. That's obvious, it was public knowledge but we didn't reach an economic agreement.

Schmeichel has established himself as one of the top keepers in the Premier League over the last three seasons, and was a key part of the Leicester side that won the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season.

"But it's Real Madrid's right to ask for their players the amount of money that they want. And we didn't arrive at an agreement with Real Madrid".

Matic is likely to miss Chelsea's pre-season tour to Asia amid talk of United's interest, but Mourinho would not be drawn on his former player - only his summer intentions.

He said: "We don't have our door closed, we are not happy with just Lukaku and Lindelof, we need more, we wanted four, so I would say 50 per cent of the job done".

"The directors made an offer which they felt was fair but even so, we didn't reach an agreement". "He's a striker, so we're not speaking about a multi-functional player or [one who will] create doubts about positions on the pitch, he's a striker and normally strikers score goals", Mourinho added.

"He is a player who made it to the first team with me [at Real Madrid] and I have a special liking for".
