Neerja named the best picture at IIFA 2017

If you don't know let us tell you that Sushant and Shahid were nominated in best actor category for their performances in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Udta Punjab, respectively. Aniruddha Roy Choudhruy got the award for Best Director for his film Pink. Speaking at the weekend press conference about the IIFA Awards in NY, the 24-year-old actress said that she has not been a part of the IIFA till today and now feels like everything happens for a reason.

In an interview, the Raabta actor had said, "Me and IIFA (International Indian Film Academy Awards) go back a long way. Shahid captioned the picture as, "#Udtapunjab double whammy.

Congrats, Shahid, Alia, and Diljit for the well-deserved victory!

Alia Bhatt was declared the Style Icon Of the year, a breather from Sonam Kapoor who has won endless awards for the same category now.

The hijacker in Neerja won the IIFA award for his cruel portrayal of a terrorist who ends up killing Nerja.

Other nominees in the field included Karan Johar for "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, ' Neeraj Pandey for 'M.S. Dhoni, ' Ram Madhvani for 'Neerja, ' Ali Abbas Zafar for 'Sultan" and Abhishek Chaubey for 'Udta Punjab'.

The best playback singer female award was shared by Tulsi Kumar for "Soch na sake" (Airlift) and Kanika Kapoor for "Da da dasse" (Udta Punjab). Disha Patani won the Best Debut (Female) award for MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Diljit Dosanjh took the Best Debut (Male) for Udta Punjab. In the mean time, Shakun Batra and Ayesha Devitre Dhillon left with the honor for Best Story.

The academy selected gender equality as its cause of the year, despite a film industry often criticised for depicting women as meek and subjecting characters to aggressive wooing by dominant male leads.

The hosts for the ceremony were Saif Ali Khan and Johar, who had the audience in splits with their amusing one-liners and banter.
