Qatar World Cup boycott is 'fake news'

The Arab quartet have expelled Qatari nationals and imposed a blockade, impacting mixed-nationality families in the Gulf, students and people seeking medical treatment overseas.

"France is calling for measures to be taken, to lift the siege undergoing, particularly the harms that has affected dual national families in the region", said Le Drian.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian arrived in Saudi Arabia to help address the ongoing Qatar diplomatic crisis.

The four Arab states accuse Qatar of ties to Iran and of funding Islamist extremist groups.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have denied receiving a letter from six countries calling for Qatar to be stripped of the 2022 World Cup.

"For public consumption at least, the US State Department is trying to send out a signal that it has worked hard with its three allies - Saudi, UAE, Qatar - to try to find a mutually agreeable solution", Christopher Davidson, an expert on Middle East politics at Britain's Durham University, told AFP.

The story appeared to surface on "The Local" website and said six nations called Qatar "the base of terrorism".

Many analysts are sceptical about Washington's efforts to resolve the crisis between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and its allies, saying USA officials are not that willing to see the crisis settled soon because the perpetuation of the crisis would benefit Washington. The Gulf Cooperation Council, in short, wants Qatar's rulers to stop undermining the cause of Arab royalty by henceforth adhering faithfully to the monarchial line as set forth by the Saudis.

"In my view, there's a changed sense of willingness to at least be open to talking to one another", Tillerson said, adding, "The final and ultimate resolution may take quite a while".

On July 11, USA and Qatar signed an agreement to help combat "terrorism financing".

Qatar's neighbors should end the hurtful boycott against the country "as soon as possible", France's foreign minister has said.

Qatar said in late May that hackers had posted fake remarks by the emir, an explanation rejected by Gulf states.

Qatar has hosted several senior Brotherhood figures, given television airtime to the hugely influential Brotherhood-associated cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, and championed the Brotherhood during the Arab Spring revolutions through the Doha-based TV news network Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Qatar attended an worldwide meeting on countering Islamic State group financing on Friday.

France may not be as influential in this region as the United States.
