The Tamil Nadu right hander has not played any competitive cricket since suffering a wrist injury after the Australia series, which Virat Kohli's men won 2-1.

Shikhar Dhawan has been announced as Murali Vijay's replacement for India's tour of Sri Lanka, which starts with the first Test on July 26 at Galle.

Dhawan did show form in the lone T20I that India played against West Indies, but the opener failed to convert his 12 ball 23 into a big score.

"Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist, while playing a preparatory match". The BCCI medical team has subsequently advised Vijay to continue his rehabilitation program. He has four hundreds to his credit in an accumulated 1464 runs.

Meanwhile, Dhawan returns to Test squad having last represented India in 2016 against New Zealand. The left-hander had an outstanding run in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, where he smashed 338 runs from five games.

"SDhawan25 to replace injured Murali Vijay for India's tour of Sri Lanka, 2017", Indian board tweeted. All the three Test matches will be played in Galle, Colombo and Kandy. This is the first time the two countries will be playing a full series (includes all three formats) in eight years.

The Virat Kohli-led side is set to play three Test matches, five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and a one-off Twenty20 International during the series.
