Russia's Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina clinched the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in ruthless fashion, hammering Chan Hao-ching and Monica Niculescu 6-0 6-0.

"It's very special", Vesnina told Wimbledon's official website.

That final was also the longest men's doubles championship match at Wimbledon lasting 5 hours 1 minute.

This victory was the first for Russian tennis players at Wimbledon, while Vesnina made her way to the Wimbledon final in pairs for the third time in her career, Makarova did it for the second, reports Tass news agency.

They also won their 10th doubles title together, the second one this year after 2017 Dubai, and it is definitely one of the most important ones.

Williams had been trying to win her sixth Wimbledon title.

On their way to the final, the Russians secured a relatively comfortable 7:5, 6:2 win over Czech Republic's Kveta Peschke and Germany's Anna-Lena Gronefeld.

"Actually, it was our goal for all the time that we were playing". Muguruza, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2015 but lost to Serena, won last year's French Open.
