The first tee shot will be hit at 0635 local time by American Mark O'Meara, who was the victor in 1998 at Royal Birkdale.

The high profile trio off on Thursday at 2.48pm.

Wood finished fifth at Birkdale in 2008 and won the silver medal as leading amateur, before missing out on the play-off between Tom Watson and Stewart Cink by a single shot the following year at Turnberry.

Reigning champion Henrik Stenson is paired with this year's Players Championship victor Kim Si-Woo and former Masters champion Jordan Spieth while Masters champion Sergio Garcia will play with 2015 Open victor Zach Johnson and former world number one Jason Day.

Harrington might have won at the Scottish Open last weekend but for a wretched 79 in the third round. "We certainly need to step that up quite a lot if we want to have anything to do with it next week".

The final group available begin at 9.58am and contains Justin Rose, Justin Thomas and 2010 champion Louis Oosthuizen, with voting closing at midday on Wednesday.

Home favourite Tommy Fleetwood will partner US Open champion Brooks Koepka and Japan's world No 2 Hideki Matsuyama off the first at 10.09am.

Another of the eye-catching groups for the start of the Open will see Rory McIlroy, who has missed the cut on three of his last four starts, go round with world number one Dustin Johnson and South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia will be joined by Australian Jason Day and 2015 champion Zach Johnson. He will be playing with American Ryan Moore and England's Chris Wood.
