Four men taken into custody on Sunday afternoon following an investigation into the death of a woman in a Melbourne apartment have been released without charge.

The body of the woman, who has not been identified, was found in a serviced apartment on Market St in the CBD around 8:00am Sunday.

Four men, all aged in their late 20s to early 30s from the ACT and NSW, are now in custody assisting with the investigation.

It is believed she returned to the hotel room on the 10th floor of Oaks on Market with the men on Saturday night. She was found dead in the shower on the following morning.

Homicide detectives believe the woman was in her 20s and say she was wearing a black, long-sleeved top, blue denim shorts and white running shoes.

Members of the group declined to tell reporters who the dead woman was or how they met her, but did say they had been "stitched up".

It appears that the group of men were not the ones who called emergency services.
