At least 25 dead in Nepal landslides and flash floods

At least 23 people were killed and hundreds of families were displaced in floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall across the country on Friday night.

The water level in many rivers has crossed the danger mark and changed their course, with a threat to houses and livelihood.

Landslides and floods are common in Nepal during the monsoon season and the rest of the region.

"We are still collecting the details of the loss".

7 persons died in Sunsari district, 4 in Jhapa 4 in Sindhuli, 3 each in Banke, Morang and Panchthara districts and 6 in other parts of Nepal due to heavy rains since yesterday.

The Prime Minister's office issued a statement putting the death toll at more than two dozen since Friday.

Nepalese Home Minister Janardan Sharma said that all the security agencies will be mobilised in an integrated manner for carrying out the rescue operations.

In the eastern city of Biratnagar an airport runway was under two feet of water, TV footage showed, leading to a suspension of flights.

Chief of Morang district police Arun BC said that airport had been shut due to the flooding. Almost 100 people died past year in Nepal during the rainy season, which typically begins in late June and lasts until the end of August.

Nepal's weather department issued an alert Saturday warning that heavy rains were expected to continue for another day, and advised districts to close schools and residents to stay indoors.
