An inmate who escaped the Winfield Correctional Facility in south-central Kansas has been captured.

When the deputy tried to approach Mitchell, he ran into a corn field off of Elm Street. "And we have brought in several resources to help in the search".

Mitchell was described as a black man standing 6-1 and weighing 210 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

KAKE's Chris Frank reported just before 5 p.m. that Mitchell was located and taken into custody.

53-year-old Lewis Mitchell was found late Wednesday afternoon in the Douglass area, where he was seen by a deputy earlier in the day.

Herzet said the search included police officers from Andover, Augusta, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, deputies from Sedgwick and Sumner counties and officers from the U.S. Marshal's Service. He was last seen wearing a white state-issued T-shirt, and either blue jeans or gray sweatpants. He also may be wearing a red hoodie.

Mitchell was serving time for burglary from Sedgwick County.

Officials say Mitchell is considered to be risky.
