City's mega-spending is a one-off, insists Guardiola

Arsenal came fifth and Manchester United's sixth position brought back a sense of familiarity in the top 6 that went haywire in the previous season with Leicester City becoming the champions.

"The club was clever like that because we anticipated what we needed".

City's playing staff has undergone a massive overhaul over the last two summer transfer windows after Guardiola took over one of the oldest squads in Europe. A hard call to say who'll come out on top before the transfer window closes but, with rumblings of discontent at Stamford Bridge, I'll go for United, who look a little more solid defensively than their neighbours.

The mistakes of last season must be learned from - that preseason tactical shift and move for Ederson suggests they have at least been recognised - if City are to mount a sustained challenge, but Guardiola now knows that he is in a six- or even seven-way fight for the title, rather than the two-horse race he had in Spain or the annual procession he enjoyed with Bayern.

"We didn't have full-backs and you have to buy full-backs", the Spaniard added.

"Last season in my first press conference we were the favourites so nothing has changed". I think it will be a draw. I'm going to be fearless and say the game will finish 4-0. Perhaps we've got to ensure that all our players give their all and hope that City are off-colour, but it can happen that way.

"I have a feeling that we will score early and get a good win against Brighton on Saturday".

Morata made 26 appearances for Real Madrid last season in La Liga, majority as a substitute, with 15 goals and four assists. His bosses, City's Abu Dhabi-based hierarchy rather than the Catalan axis of chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain, will not be quite so understanding and accepting of failure if major silverware is not delivered this season. The pressure it's never a big problem.

Whatever the answer is, City have strengthened what was already a strong squad and should challenge for the league title and make a deep run in the Champions League next season. I'm honest in my job. Twenty-five years of the Premier League and he calls it "the most watched, the most followed all around the world". We have to deal with that and handle that. People say in [the] first press conference we are favourites. Marcus Suttner has arrived to play at left-back while young Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown looks a real talent, but perhaps the best piece of business could be the capture of Pascal Gross to play in the advanced midfield role of an expected 4-4-1-1 formation, or CAM as my Federation Internationale de Football Association brainwashed sons will tell me.

"City are probably not going to know as much about us as we do about them".
