Just days after a morale-boosting win for Congress leader Ahmed Patel in a hard-fought Rajya Sabha election, the opposition received a setback with NCP staying away from a meeting called to chalk out a joint strategy against BJP.

NCP was, however, conspicuous by its absence, especially in the backdrop of the just concluded Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat on Tuesday where it was at logger heads with the Congress party over support to senior leader Ahmed Patel.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday expressed deep shock over the heart-wrenching incident in UP CM Yogi Adityanath's hometown Gorakhpur in which 32 children were died due to oxygen disruption.

West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is slated to attend the meeting.

The NCP decision to stay away from the meeting of opposition leaders, attended by Mamata Banerjee (Trinamool), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Omar Abdullah (NC), Naresh Agarwal (SP), S C Mishra (BSP) among others, was Pawar's way of telling the Congress that smaller allies can not be taken for granted.

NCP has been urging the Congress to form an alliance for the year-end Gujarat assembly elections, a proposal that was given a cold shoulder by the latter.

JD (U) general secretary K C Tyagi said, "Calling our party members in meeting of Opposition leaders reveals Sonia Gandhi's wrong intentions". The BJP camp also said that the NCP MLAs did not vote in its favour, suggesting that there could have been more cross-voting from the Congress ranks. Parties that have a strong organisational strength in each of these states could take the lead in organising the programmes and other parties will join them, to make their presence felt on the ground. She has been the longest serving Congress president in the 125-year history of the party after being re-elected for the fourth time in September 2010. The meeting was about to talk and discuss the strategy against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi the leading Central Government.
