Tensions high over North Korea

In a statement late Wednesday, the North Korean military dismissed Trump's warning Tuesday as a "load of nonsense" and said only "absolute force" would work on someone so "bereft of reason".

The Weekly Standard reported Wednesday that the White House, including the president's national security team, did not help Trump prepare his remarks on North Korea, which were delivered ahead of a meeting on the opioid crisis in the USA and prompted by new reports that North Korea has escalated its nuclear program.

Fazio's caption indicated he'd golfed with the president Wednesday at Trump's Bedminster, N.J., course.

ZELDIN: Absolutely. Wherever you have any entity, whether it's an individual, a - or a business organization that is helping the North Koreans with their exports or obviously anything specifically targeting - directed to their program, then we should be using that leverage to show how serious we are and get China to hopefully up their game.

Asked what would have been tougher than "fire and fury", Trump replied only, "You'll see.

Nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump, that I can tell you", he said.

The statement also said that the North Korean military would finalize a plan by mid-August to fire four midrange missiles into the waters off the Pacific island of Guam, a United States territory used as a strategic base, to create a "historic enveloping fire".

"It's a very big decision for me", Politico news quoted the President as saying.

"The United States is entitled to defend itself and its ally, but the strategy is to force North Korea, through diplomatic and economic means, to stop its illegal ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons programs", she told the Channel Nine on Thursday. "Whether we've got them backed into a corner or not is hard to say, but diplomatically, you never like to have someone in a corner without a way for them to get out". "I don't think we are there yet".

Lastly, we believe that North Korea's calculations is basically to preserve a regime. Trump took the opportunity to bash former U.S. presidents who presided over a slowly nuclearizing North Korea and failed to bring the program to a halt.

North Korea gave no indication that it would do so.

- Trump declined to say whether he would rule out a preemptive military strike against North Korea, saying: "We don't talk about that".

"China should make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten US territories and triggers USA retaliations, China will stay neutral".

MARTIN: Any more effort created to put more pressure on China - targeting specific banks, targeting businesses that do business with North Korea? They go back and forth; they send conflicting signals. At some point either Trump is going to have to reverse himself and damage credibility, or he's going to feel compelled to execute on those threats, which could cost the lives of a lot of people.
