Trump administration's mixed messages on North Korea

"Until other nations disarm, the United States will remain the world's top nuclear power", Trump said during his Thursday press conference in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The current flare-up over North Korea's missile tests and Donald Trump's belligerent response is frightening for many, but anyone anxious that Pyongyang wants to start a war is - fortunately - mistaken.

Trump said it was time that somebody stood up to the pariah nation.

First, understand that North Korea is a pawn in a geostrategic chess game being played by China and Russian Federation against the United States. Ballistic missiles such as those North Korea has fired go high into space, where satellites are operating.

But in North Korea's corner, its main trading partner and treaty ally China, has sent a signal that it won't risk backing Pyongyang.

The brinkmanship between US President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, both volatile and erratic leaders, over North Korea's nuclear weapons program is rightly causing profound concern around the world.

A video shows Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo laughing and joking with the president as they discuss everything from the readiness of the U.S. military to tourism.

Mr Trump said on Thursday that threat earlier this week to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it launched an attack may not have been tough enough, triggering fresh selling in global financial markets. I join Representative Conyers and my Democratic colleagues in calling on the Trump Administration to work with the worldwide community and engage in diplomatic discussions with North Korea. "I think that what he's trying to do in the short run is to communicate with great intensity that we are serious".

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis later tempered Mr. Trump's harsh words, saying the U.S. still preferred a diplomatic approach to the North Korean threat.

READ: Will North Korea attack the U.S.? "We note that China has unique leverage over North Korea and we encourage China to use that to bring this regime to its senses", he said.

Other critics of Trump's foreign policy point out that there is no certain time frame for such an effort and remind us that China has emphatically resisted reunification.

He spoke as North Korea accused him of "driving" the Korean peninsula to the "brink of a nuclear war".

"I think the problem is nobody is clear what the red line is", Rice said.

He said it would be possible for the USA and other nations to "crack down on the sanctions on the illicit part of the economy", of North Korea, which he said includes drug smuggling, money laundering, and components of their nuclear weapons program, all of which help fund the North Korean government. And, a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency report cited the broader U.S. intelligence community's analysis that North Korea has a miniaturized nuclear weapon that could fit on a rocket.

But they have forgotten that Mao's China, after being threatened by Russian Federation with nuclear destruction over the 1969 Ussuri River crisis, became a tacit ally of the USA throughout the rest of the Cold War, even helping undermine the USSR in Afghanistan.

Guam, a tropical island more than 3,000 km (2,000 miles) to the southeast of North Korea, is home to about 163,000 people.

"Sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him", KCNA said, calling Trump's "fire and fury" comment "a load of nonsense". It has a strategically located US air base, a Navy installation that includes a submarine squadron, a Coast Guard group and roughly 6,000 USA military service members.
