The deceased were identified as brothers Jahangir, 24, and Izaz, 22, who had gone to the Aggarwal Fun City Mall in Anand Vihar to clean a sewage tank with their father, Yusuf, 50.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdra district, Nupur Prasad said the father of the deceased, who was working with them inside the sewer, and a fireman, who went to rescue them, have been admitted to hospital after they too complained of suffocation and are now under observation.

When asked about the deaths, the DCP said that the two didn't have any safety equipment on and no one has been arrested so far.

One of the firemen, Mahipal, who had entered the sewer, also inhaled the toxic fumes and collapsed, they said. "Head Constable Mahipal from the fire department then went in to rescue the trio, but he also inhaled the gas, hit his head against the wall of the tank and sustained injuries".

"The victims' father and the firefighter are admitted at Hedgewar Hospital where they are under observation", said Nupur Prasad, DCP (Shahdara).

All of them were rushed to the Hedgewer Hospital, where Jahangir was declared dead on arrival while Izaz died during treatment. She said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder will be registered.

Meanwhile, Delhi Water Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam tweeted that the workers died while cleaning a septic tank in the mall but the police clarified that it was a sewage tank.

Last week, three sanitation workers died due to asphyxiation while cleaning a drain in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area. When he did not come out, a second worker went inside to check on him.
