"The doctors told me, "You could have killed yourself", he said. I didn't take them as seriously as I should have.

Following his knee operation, he began taking the opioid painkiller Tramadol and became addicted.

Award-winning TV presenter Ant McPartlin has spoken about his addiction to prescription painkillers after spending two months in rehab.

Dec's presenting partner said he was rushed to hospital at 5am after the incident.

He added: "I was insane". It sends you insane. "It was to the point of hearing things, seeing things in the garden and still the pain was getting worse".

The star said he was "depressed through the whole thing" because he was in pain and immobile.

However for the first time in three years he is now clean of all drugs, and has lost a stone since being admitted into rehab in June. He then had a botched operation on it the next year.

"Initially I was prescribed co-codamol, codeine, the normal stuff you would get, and then a lot of opium-based stuff", he said.

"I would go for it first because it would make the pain disappear and kind of numb it". But then we found my pain had been caused by a hole in my knee bone - it was shot. It is also extremely addictive.

McPartlin added how he didn't realise his addiction was a problem and, despite warnings from a doctor, kept taking the medication while drinking alcohol.

He then revealed he was using a risky cocktail of drugs to get through work commitments.

He told the newspaper: "It was five in the morning and I was screaming in pain so I rang Lisa".

"There was a point on Saturday Night Takeaway past year when we performed with Take That".

Ant's hospital dash finally made him see sense and he went to rehab.

It is expected that McPartlin will return to screens in November, when he will host the next installment of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

The couple had been together for eleven years prior to their nuptials, having met on the Smash Hits tour in 1994 - with Ant performing alongside Dec as PJ and Duncan, and Lisa in pop band Deuce.
