The brain-fade derailed Newcastle's momentum and any chance of pulling off an upset against last years Premier League runner-ups. Indeed, summer signings Christian Atsu and Javier Manquillo proved impressive upon their Premier League bows for Newcastle United.

However, injuries to both Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune, as well as the utterly stupid red card shown to Jonjo Shelvey made the Magpies' task an nearly impossible one and Tottenham duly ran out winners.

Jacob Murphy and Mikel Merino are named among the substitutes on the bench, but could make their debuts for Newcastle.

Tottenham immediately took charge of the match and Alli slid in at the far post to steer in a cross from Christian Eriksen in the 61st minute.

Heung-Min Son, Vincent Janssen, Kevin Wimmer and Harry Winks are also substitutes.

Newcastle club legend Alan Shearer labelled Shelvey as "pathetic" whilst Sky commentator Alan Smith believed it was one of the most stupid dismissals he has ever seen.

- Tottenham has won 29 of its last 31 Premier League games against newly promoted sides, drawing the other two. Eric Dier plays, as does Moussa Dembele, while there is also a start for former Magpie Moussa Sissoko.

Benitez recalled: "When Newcastle went down last time, they had some good players but they did not have a team". I think we were defending well.

"We have an idea how to attack and how to defend, but football is football".
