"If you have a red card early in the game it's a shock moment for everyone but we are all professionals and we need to do better in those kind of situations", Rudiger told Chelsea's website.

Conte has struggled to hide his frustrations over Chelsea's failure to strengthen their squad, with Morata, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero their only new signings.

After N'Golo Kante had seen a shot deflected onto the roof of the net in first-half stoppage time and Marcos Alonso had been denied by Tom Heaton, Willian began to haul Chelsea back into the contest.

Alvaro Morata made his Stamford Bridge debut for the ineffective Michy Batshuayi just before the hour mark, and it was his introduction that seemed to turn the tide in favour of the home side.

Chelsea have the added pressure of Champions League football this season, and could find themselves fielding a string of inexperienced youth players across all four competitions they will take part in, if they don't strengthen their ranks.

Half-time substitute Morata and Luiz reduced the arrears in the second half, either side of Fabregas's 81st-minute dismissal for a second yellow card, but Burnley hung on for a famous victory.

Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas both got sent off as Burnley stunned the champions.

"We still gave away possession too easily in the second half. No, if we're honest", said Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Former Chelsea winger Salah, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma during the close season, won a penalty converted by Roberto Firmino in the 55th minute and then bundled in the Brazilian's lofted pass from close range.

"In our pre-season, in every pre-season, I played our best formation and I did the same against Burnley". I want to say thank you to the club.

Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, and Bernardo Silva " attacking midfielders costing a combined $175 million " came off the bench to help City clinch a 2-0 win at promoted side Brighton.

Yet with with the likes of John Terry, Nemanja Matic and potentially Diego Costa all leaving the club this summer, on top of fringe players such as Nathan Ake, Asmir Begovic and Nathaniel Chalobah, Blues boss Conte is short of strength in depth, which has become increasingly noticeable over the past week.

Rooney marked his first league start for Everton since rejoining his boyhood team from Manchester United by netting in a 1-0 win over Stoke at Goodison Park.
