That wouldn't be the end of the harsh vibes at the Bridge, and Stephen Ward scored a goal Burnley fans will never forget when he laced a gorgeous shot from an unlikely and tight angle to make it 2-0.

David Luiz's smooth finish set up a tense finale but Chelsea could not find the final goal to salvage a draw and fell to defeat.

Referee Craig Pawson was a convenient target but Chelsea's downfall was largely of their own making, as well as cool finishing from their opponents.

The story of the match was nearly encapsulated in the first few minutes of play when Marcos Alonso's reckless challenge was punished with a yellow and Ben Mee headed straight at Thibault Courtois from the ensuing free kick.

Incredibly three minutes later and it's 0-3.

Would any of this have happened with Cahill on the field?

The introduction of the club's record signing, Morata, on the hour mark sparked Chelsea into life and his first goal for the club threatened to help earn his new club an unlikely point.

Antonio Conte's team suffered without the suspended Victor Moses and the injured duo of Eden Hazard and Pedro.

The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge with a hefty price tag but it didn't seem to phase him as he came on as a second half substitute.

Yet with with the likes of John Terry, Nemanja Matic and potentially Diego Costa all leaving the club this summer, on top of fringe players such as Nathan Ake, Asmir Begovic and Nathaniel Chalobah, Blues boss Conte is short of strength in depth, which has become increasingly noticeable over the past week.

Conte, looking exhausted and disgruntled, said he preferred not to talk about the referee who also sent off Cesc Fabregas in the 82nd minute after the Spaniard earned a second yellow card for an ill-timed tackle on former Chelsea man Jack Cork.

The hosts' frustration was mixed with defiance as they fought back.

And though Alvaro Morata and David Luiz would net in the second half to spare Chelsea some embarrassment, Cesc Fabregas' late second booking further reduced their chances of completing an improbable comeback.

Conte will be hoping he puts in plenty of similar performances this season.
