The 16-year-old walked into the salon and told hair stylist, Kayley Olson, 20, she had school pictures coming up and wanted to shave her hair off, saying it could not be saved.

Touched by the young girl's plight, the hairdresser refused to shave off her hair and instead spent 13 hours fixing it for her instead.

The hero hairdresser transformed the girl's matted hair into an unrecognisable, stylish crop which her client could wear to school with pride.

The powerful Facebook post has since gone viral, with more than 150,000 likes and 64,000 shares, with thousands of people praising the hairstylist's determination to save the girl's hair.

But, even better than that, the cut went down a treat with the one person who really matters: the girl.

Taking to Facebook, Kayley described the whole story of how her customer had hit rock bottom as a result of her mental illness.

"I will actually smile for my school pictures today, you made me feel like me again", the girl told Ms Olsson.

"She got to the point where she felt so down and so worthless she couldn't even brush her hair, she told me she only got up to use the restroom", she explained on Facebook.

"She has her school pictures today". "It honestly broke my heart", she writes in her post. "At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people", she added.

'A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair.

"After being here 8 hours yesterday and 5 hours today we finally made this handsome girl smile and feel like she IS worth something!" The reason for the state of the girl's hair, Olsson said, was a side effect of her severe depression.

And earlier this year, we also revealed all the signs of depression to look out for in yourself and others. "But you took the time and invested time she needed to be invested in her for her to know she has beauty and value", said one follower.

Olsson says since the young woman left the salon Tuesday she has been in contact with her.

Mary Litchfield wrote: 'You did a handsome job. Most people who have taken the easy way and just cut her hair and told her stat (sic) fresh. The anonymous client, whose privacy has been protected by Olsson, shared the details of her hard journey.
