Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal then rotated his spinners in the second session and India lost three wickets in just 11 overs to give the hosts a foothold in the game.

Sri Lanka Cricket said right-arm fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Gamage were brought into the squad in place of injured Nuwan Pradeep and Rangana Herath.

India won the toss for the third time in a row and made a decision to bat first.

In the fourth over of the second session, the pair went past the 150-run stand and soon held the record for the highest opening stand against Sri Lanka in their own backyard when they reached 175. The last home worldwide season, the lower order had taken India to bigger totals. India's only concern coming into the Test was Kohli's atrocious form in Test cricket, something that seems to have been exacerbated by his captaincy.

"I was saying jokingly that if you bat like a king, you should also get out like a king, you should not be dismissed like a soldier". Over the course of his next six balls, Pandya went on to mangle them, taking 26 runs off them with the cleanest striking imaginable, all of it executed with the stillest of heads and the smoothest of bat-swings. Rahul was the first to depart at 85 trying to pull off an aggressive shot but was caught by Karunaratne off Malinda Pushpakumara.

Dhawan faced 123 balls in his knock and punished the home bowlers with 17 boundaries. Kohli and Rahane fought for a brief period before Rahane was cleaned up by Pushpakumara.

At stumps, Wriddhiman Saha (13) and Hardik Pandya (one) were batting at the crease. He may have played just one Test match, but the chinaman had proved his worth not just in the longer format of the game, but in ODI cricket too.

Chameera meanwhile, last played a Test in South Africa past year, but featured in four of the five ODIs against Zimbabwe - the series that Sri Lanka lost 2-3.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored centuries in the two previous tests, was out cheaply after edging Lakshan Sandakan to Angelo Mathews at slip, leaving Sri Lanka 229-3.

Lakshan Sandakan bagged two wickets while Vishwa Fernando also chipped in with a wicket.

Kohli tried to stem the rot during a 84-ball innings, ended when he edged a Sandakan delivery to slip. Indian skipper Virat Kohli, in a press conference today, mentioned that Kuldeep Yadav has a "good chance" of finding himself in the playing XI. Though Dilruwan Perera struggled and was expensive by Test standards, Pushpakumara and Sandakan received plenty of assistance from the dry, grassless pitch.
