In light of recent news about potentially defective or counterfeit eclipse-viewing glasses, Dr. Michael Chipps - president of Northeast - sent an email reassuring the "college family" that the solar eclipse glasses being distributed by Northeast were manufactured in the United States and have been certified by the British Standards Institute.

Experiencing a solar eclipse requires care: Looking at the sun during the eclipse - or at any other time - without the proper protective gear can cause eye damage, NASA said.

Portland resident Dan Fellini bought a pack of four solar eclipse glasses with his wife and a friend.

The partial eclipse is scheduled to start in Brookings at 11:37 a.m.

"Look for ISO 12312-2 to be printed on the product".

After looking at the sun, turn away to remove your filters or glasses. Turn away from the sun before removing the solar filter.

Safe eclipse glasses should be stamped with a label indicating they meet the worldwide "ISO 12312-2" standard - although Fienberg said counterfeiters have also started to print that on fake glasses.

According to eclipse2017.org, the material for safe viewing glasses is low-priced and readily available through astronomical supply houses and at their website. Those optical devices concentrate the solar rays, damaging your eclipse glasses or viewer and seriously injuring your eyes.

Library hours are from 10 a.m.to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

In Madison on Friday, the glasses were sold out at Kirkland's on the Far East Side and at Toys R Us on the Far West Side.

If you normally wear eyeglasses, put the eclipse-viewing glasses over them or hold the hand-held solar viewer in front of them. This certification is used to indicate they are safe for viewing the sun.
