All eyes were on Ducati Team's Andrea Dovizioso ahead of Saturday's qualifying for Austria MotoGP at Red Bull Ring.

It was the Italian's third win of the season after his back-to-back victories in Italy and Catalonia in June.

Dovizioso, who was second in Austria to his then team-mate Andrea Iannone previous year, took advantage of the battle between Marquez and Lorenzo to snatch the lead.

Three-time world champion Marquez's Honda team-mate and compatriot Dani Pedrosa came third.

With 154 points, Marquez has maintained his championship lead by 14 points over Vinales (140 points) and Dovizioso (133 points).

Dovizioso's third win of the season moved him up to second behind Marquez in the standings, 16 points back, as Spaniard Maverick Vinales dropped to third after finishing only sixth. The next race is the British GP at Silverstone on August 27.

With Dovizioso repeatedly blocking off Marquez's favoured overtaking spot - Turn 7 - in the final minutes, their battle came down to the very last corner of the last lap.

It was Ducati's second straight victory on the Red Bull Ring since the Austrian GP returned to the calendar a year ago.

Andrea Iannone's number one Ecstar Suzuki blew up in free practice four so he rode his second GSX-RR to tenth place with Karel Abraham, again firmly in the Caravan Club early doors behind Rossi, but bagging a 1'24.220 on his own to claim 11th with Loris Baz 12th.
