Justifying the no-show, NCP MP Praful Patel said his party was angry at being accused of not voting for Ahmed Patel despite having issued a whip in his favour. The farmer-related issue, increasing communal tension, misuse of investigating agencies, subversion of democratic institutions, attack on opposition leaders, etc were to be discussed. "Wherever we have our governments, we stand by the farmers who make the country proud by toiling in their fields", he said in his Hindi speech.

Utilising the stage to criticise veteran BJP leader LK Advani, Gandhi said the veteran was opposed to the amendment but the special status was granted once Congress came to power in 2004 under the rule of UPA-I.

"I'm happy to note that the amount that BJP has put here in five years, that much amount is being put in three months by the Congress government today", he said, taking note of various developmental activities in the region.

Calling upon the party's state leaders and cadres to work together with unity, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the party would win the assembly election in the state due in April-May 2018. "This is the difference between us".

When asked about the absence of NCP at the meeting, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters he had personally spoken to Pawar, who in turn informed him that he was unwell and was therefore skipping the meeting.

Former UP CM and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has also held BJP-led UP government responsible for the incident and demanded 20 lakh compensation for families of victims.

"When you (NDA government) waive loans of the country's 10 richest Industrialists, they don't become lazy, but when you waive farmers' loans, they become lazy". Why didn't they think about the farmers that time?

"False promises on one side, on the other hand Congress Chief Minister working from heart for the people and doesn't make hollow promises". The CPI (M) leader also said that the Left had problems over having an electoral alliance with the Congress. He also recounted how some parties had chickened out of the plan to collectively protest against demonetisations a year ago.

The incident triggered a spate of reactions from the opposition parties, with the Samajwadi Party and the Congress seeking the resignation of the state health minister.
