Former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho has joined Barcelona for a fee of €40million (£36.5m).

But Guangzhou Evergrande have reiterated their stance on their 29-year-old midfielder and insist the Brazilian will not be sold in this window.

After losing Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee of £198m, the Catalan Giants have a huge amount of money to spend on a replacement and on improvements in other areas of the squad.

In July Barcelona offered £17m for the star but have since increased their offer significantly in order to complete the deal.

Paulinho underwhelmed during a two-year spell with Spurs, but impressed in China after joining Guangzhou in 2015.

Paulinho has been linked to a move to Barcelona throughout the summer but Evergrande chairman Xu Jiayin had previously stated he would not be allowed to leave before the end of the season due to the cost associated in replacing him.

He told Mundo Deportivo: 'It is a unique opportunity for me to be able to play for Barcelona, the best team in the world and surrounded by the best players.

"I have to talk to my president, since I got the proposal I have not stopped thinking about it and I am waiting for everything to be resolved this week".

Barcelona look in prime position to sign Coutinho who has agreed personal terms with the Spanish club already and earlier this week handed in a transfer request.
