Gardai are now carrying out a search in an area of land in South Dublin in connection with the disappearance of Naas man Trevor Deely 17 years ago.

The 22-year-old was last seen walking home after a Christmas party in the city centre in December 2000.

Tragically, gardai have confirmed they've received information claiming Trevor Deely was murdered by a known criminal.

New information led gardaí to the woodland area in Chapelizod 16-and-a-half years after he was last seen.

In April, a fresh appeal into his disappearance was issued after enhanced CCTV footage showed him talking to a man who detectives believe was "acting suspiciously".

The search - said to be the most significant since Trevor's disappearance - on the three-acre site will last for a number of weeks.

The search is, however, said to be unrelated to the footage.

Detective Inspector Paul Costello says the search area remains closed to the public.
